El Sargento was a fishing town but lately it is becoming a windsurf destination. The great combination of winds and beautiful sea, makes it perfect for windsurfers.

There are some windsurf camps you can stay in and there are a couple of local windsurf schools if you want to learn this cool sport. Since it is not well known yet, there is a great atmosphere in a not crowded scene. This makes this little spot, one of the most amazing places to practice windsurf in Mexico.

Apart from windsurf, you can also do sport fishing and snorkelling. The El Sargento beaches are fantastic, crystal clear waters and a coral reef makes it perfect to explore with your mask, fins and snorkel.

There are also great desert hills to go for a hike and enjoy the spectacular sunsets or camp by the beach. There are local bars and restaurants to enjoy great sea food and drinks with friends.

Lately, I am finding pretty good deals to fly to Mexico from Canada and the States. I now live in Canada and try to visit my family in Baja as often as I can.

Aircanada and westjet are the best options if you live in western canada. Although if you fly with aircanada you would need to fly to Mexico city first and then over to Baja. This option might be a more tiring but cheaper than flying directly to Cabo for example.

You could also fly to La Paz with some layovers in the States with air alaska for cheap. The main thing to check is seasonal deals. It is surprising that many times is cheaper to fly from Canada to Baja than from Mexico city to Baja!

These days, with all the cold and snow, it sounds like a great time to scape to Mexico and enjoy the sun, the sea and the food!

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow-moving filter feeding shark, the largest living fish species. The largest confirmed individual was 12.65 metres (41.50 ft) in length. Although whale sharks have very large mouths, they feed mainly, though not exclusively, on plankton, microscopic plants and animals.

From some years ago, whale sharks stay very close and around the La Paz Bay. They are friendly and they are great animals to watch and swim with. Many people visit La Paz to be able to swim and snorkle side by side of this impressive animal. You can rent a tour on a boat in La Paz and get close to them and let them come close to you or swim with them. It is a great experience. Last year, in 2010, they stayed all year long very close to the bay. Previously, the whale sharks would swim in winter to warmer waters. If you wish, you can also kayak around them and leave from the bay and do this tour in a day.

El tecolote (owl) is a very popular beach with restaurants very close to La Paz it is located at the end of the road to Pichilingue, which is the Ferry port.

El tecolote beach is a nice beach for camping. Tourists like to stay in their camper vans there during the winter and during the summer there are contests and events organised by local bars. You can carry out sea activities like kayaking, water ski and snorkeling in its quiet waters. You can also take a boat from this beach towards the Espiritu Santo Island, which makes a great short trip (6-8 hours). In this island you can visit a colony of sea lions, snorkle with them or relax and eat ceviche in one of its peaceful beaches.

El tecolote also offers great sea food restaurants. You can enjoy of a drink while you contemplate the sunset. Very recommended.

San Antonio is located South of La Paz, Baja California Sur. Drive towards Cabo and take the diversion to San Antonio after passing San Pedro.

This region offers great places to explore and get a closer look at the hills and desert landscape. Enjoy clear blue skies and a big plant diversity for this desertic area. Also, there are some ranches which produce ornamental plants and regional crafts.

This region is also great to start hiking in the hills surrounding San Antonio. You can go and camp and explore freely. It is advisable to take water and food with you since the nearest convenience store is in San Antonio.
